Understanding Medicare Advantage

Overview

Medicare Advantage plans offer traditional Medicare coverage along with additional services for preventative and early detection care. These plans provide coordinated care, combine all of the policies into one package and may have less expensive premiums than traditional coverage. Types of Medicare Advantage plans may include:

Local Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Or Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

Providers that contract with healthcare providers and offer you a network to choose from for your Medicare-covered health care options.

Private Fee For Service Plans (PFFS)

Offered by private insurance companies and do not require you to use a network of providers as long as the organization is eligible to receive payment from Medicare and agrees to accept payment from the PFFS.

Special Needs Plans (SNP)

Restricted to beneficiaries who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, live in long-term care institutions or have certain chronic conditions.

Regional PPOs

Established to provide rural beneficiaries greater access to Medicare Advantage plans and cover entire state or multi-state regions.
